File Formats and Resolutions

My name is Nichole Chaney and I am the Marketing & Design Manager at Victor Corporation. I hope the information is helpful to you in understanding file formats. I put together a list of file types and the type of media that they should be used for. If you have additional questions or suggested topics, email me at nichole.chaney@victorcorporation.com and I can respond directly.

What are the differences between file formats and which would should I use?

First of all, let me explain the two main types of files and then the subcategories underneath those main file types.

The first type is raster (or bitmap) graphics that are made up of tiny dots or pixels. These raster graphics are used for photographs and complex images. The second type is vector graphics that are made up of fancy math equations. Vector graphics are typically used for logos, text and illustrations. Raster graphics only hold a certain amount of pixels and therefore, can lose quality if scaled or made bigger. Raster graphics are usually created and edited in Photoshop. Vector graphic can be scaled indefinitely and will retain their quality. Vector graphics are mostly created  and edited in Illustrator.

Here is an image that shows the differences of raster & vector. The vector logo is high quality with clean and crisp lines. Vector logos print at a much better quality than the raster files. Please send vector logos for any printed collateral- flyers, books, signs and billboards.

Types of Raster Files (Images)

.jpg format (Joint Photographic)- Typically used for photographs and images. They can be high resolution or low resolution. Compression is used when saved and therefore, the image will lose quality every time the image is opened and then resaved. This format does not support transparency, so the image will retain its’ background, the image will be flattened (no layers) and things cannot be easily moved around or edited. However, .jpgs are usually smaller in size and easier to send and share; therefore they are great for web images (to keep file size low and web speed fast) or images that will be static and do not need a lot of changes.

.png format (Portable Network Graphics)- This format is similar to .jpg format except that it does support transparency (can have a blank background.) .png’s are also great for the web because their file sizes are smaller than none compression file types. They are better at keeping high quality and more clear crisp lines for a graphic involving text, charts or detailed illustrations.

.gif format (Graphics Interchange Format)- This format is also similar to .jpg or .png except that it limits the number of colors to 256. It does support transparency and allows for an animation loop. For example, the image below using moving sparkles on a Fireflies Diamond Pendant. (These are going way too fast- but you get the idea.) For a tutorial on making a .gif in Photoshop click here.

Fireflies

.psd format (Adobe Photoshop)- This format is a native Adobe Photoshop file. It should be used for original copies of files containing layers and all of the information needed to edit the file in the future without any loss of quality. These types of files can be rather large in  file size because of the data and layers of information it contains.

.tif format (Tag Image Format)- This format is used for high resolution files. It holds more data (and therefore is higher quality) than the other types of raster files. It is usually a flattened file to reduce file size. This format is used for print because of its’ high resolution.

Types of Vector Files (Illustrations)

.ai format (Adobe Illustrator)- This format is a native Illustrator file. It is a layered working file that can be edited without loss of data. It can be scaled infinitely without losing quality. This is usually where all vector files start before they are exported to other formats. The size of an .ai file is dependent on the graphics it contains; however they are usually much smaller in size that raster files.

.eps format (Encapsulated Postscript)- Typically uses for logos and illustrations exported from Illustrator. Can be scaled without losing quality and supports transparency. The file is usually a finalized file that is supported by more programs than an .ai file. Used in printed collateral- especially large scale printing (banners, posters etc.)

.pdf format (Portable Document Format)- Usually, a flattened finished file that is essentially a digital version of a hard copy print out. It is a widely accepted and supported file and in some cases can be edited in Adobe Acrobat. The files size can be low or high depending on the content and/or resolution.

Standard Resolutions-

Dots Per Inch- printing

Pixels Per Inch- screen

High Resolution (300 dpi or higher)- flyers, books, signs, banners and billboards

Medium Resolution (150 dpi)- newspapers, proofs

Screen Resolution- Pixels by Pixels. 72 dpi is a myth. To read more about this click here.
